Arlo has the sort of death you would not want read out at your funeral. A car clips him in the bike lane, a roadside oak finishes the job, and the next thing he sees is the words you died and a menu politely offering him the choice to stay that way. He picks the other option. What he gets is a small thatched room somewhere else entirely, a fire, a scatter of candles, a countdown, and an enormous leather bound book that is unnervingly warm to the touch, like the hide of something still alive. Somebody has scrawled notes in the margins of that book in a hurried hand, offering him choices nobody else is being offered, and there is no time at all to work out why.
The world on the other side is Arzia, and it runs on Delves: ancient dungeons that hand out real power to anyone who walks back out of one. Once a year a hundred candidates go into the Creation Delve together and get sorted into parties of five at random. Arlo gets four armed strangers, a threadbare linen shirt, no weapon, and a party leader who sets the difficulty to Platinum, the highest there is, without troubling to ask. The doors do not open again until it is cleared. He has been in this world for about an hour.
What makes people press this book on their friends is the choice he makes in that little room. His highest stat by a mile is Intelligence, the obvious road to being a powerful caster, and he puts nothing into it at all. Every point goes into Fortitude, the health and endurance stat, because he has just experienced dying and did not care for it. The result is a spellcaster built like a load bearing wall, with one touch range spell and a passive aura that quietly heals everyone standing near him. It should not work. Watching exactly how far it does work, while four competent adults do arithmetic out loud about poison ticks and regeneration rates in the middle of a fight, is the whole pleasure of the series.
The humor sits somewhere near Dungeon Crawler Carl, dry and fast and fond of its own idiots, and the system itself is a character rather than a menu, openly enjoying the joke it is playing on him. It is worth knowing going in that the comedy sits on top of real teeth: the author cheerfully warns about horror, graphic violence and a great deal of swearing, and people in this party do die. It began as a Royal Road serial in 2023, found its crowd, and has run steadily through Aethon Books ever since, so five books are already waiting for you.

Mage Tank 5 came out on July 22, 2026 and went into Kindle Unlimited with the rest of the run. Mage Tank 6 has a preorder page and a release date of March 17, 2027, which keeps the roughly two books a year pace the series has held since Aethon Books picked it up. Cornman is posting the sixth book on Royal Road as it is written.
The audiobooks keep step with the ebooks through book five, all narrated by Daniel Wisniewski, whose flat unbothered reading of Arlo is most of the reason the audio crowd is so loud about this one.

The audiobook angle
There is an audiobook for every released book, published by Aethon Audio and narrated throughout by Daniel Wisniewski. It is the format a lot of this fandom recommends first: his timing is deadpan rather than theatrical, which suits a hero whose defining trait is being unimpressed by things that are on fire. Book one runs about twenty and a half hours.
