Cozy cultivation fantasy · Lantern light over the Azure Hills

Beware of Chicken

On Kindle Unlimited, checked July 28, 2026
Everyone else is climbing to heaven over each other. He is putting in the rice, and the rice is doing rather well.

Jin Rou dies somewhere else and wakes up here, in the body of a young cultivator, in a world where people chase immortality by out-fighting, out-scheming and out-living everybody around them. He looks at that ladder for about as long as it takes to understand it, and then he steps off. He walks to the Azure Hills, the poorest and least fashionable province in the empire, buys a neglected patch of land nobody wanted, and starts a farm. He calls it Fa Ram.

The joke, and also the whole heart of it, is that he turns out to be very good at this and the world will not stop noticing. He works honestly, he feeds his neighbours, he builds a house with his own hands, and all the power he is no longer spending on duels soaks quietly into the dirt instead. His rice comes in heavy. His valley goes green in hills everybody had written off as dead ground. And his animals begin to wake up, starting with a rooster who is fed a spirit herb one morning and decides, with tremendous dignity, to become something more.

What you actually get, page to page, is seasons. Planting and harvest, meals cooked and eaten slowly, a village that starts as neighbours and ends as family, a courtship that takes its time and means it. The humour never lets up, most of it coming from a modern man narrating a martial arts epic he refuses to participate in, and from animals who take their new dignity extremely seriously. Real danger does arrive. It lands hard when it comes, precisely because by then you know exactly what this man has to lose.

A warm note about pace: five books are out, Travis Baldree narrates every one of them, and the web serial that feeds the books is still running three times a week. This is not a series that will leave you waiting and wondering.

Is it on Kindle Unlimited?

Yes. All five books are in Kindle Unlimited as of July 28, 2026, checked that morning against the Amazon store rather than copied from a list. That is a genuinely nice surprise, because this publisher often keeps its books out of Kindle Unlimited, so treat the date stamp as the point and not as decoration. If you are not a member, a Kindle Unlimited membership is a 30-day free trial for eligible new members, then $11.99 a month, auto renews, cancel anytime. If you would rather just own them, book one is the cheapest door in and the prices on this page come straight from Amazon every morning.

Five books out, and the serial is still running

Book five arrived on December 2, 2025, and it is the quiet one: after a year that held a tournament, a hard revelation about the Azure Hills and a calamity that genuinely cost something, book five comes home and sits down with the family. It is the shortest of the five and, by common account, the warmest.

The story that feeds the books is still going. Casualfarmer has been posting Beware of Chicken on Royal Road since January 2021, three chapters a week, and the serial is deep into its seventh arc while the published books are through the fifth. A sixth book is widely expected and has not been dated. When it gets one, this shelf will say so.

The audiobook angle

All five books are narrated by Travis Baldree for Podium Audio, roughly seventy nine hours end to end, and the audio is the format most readers will tell you to pick. Baldree gives the rooster a gravity that should not work and completely does. An Audible membership is a 30-day free trial for eligible new members, then $14.95 a month, auto renews, cancel anytime.
